Roadmap
Last modified: September 3, 2011This is the way udev-discover should improve and evolve. This is a call for developers too, so I you think you can help, don’t hesitate and tell me.
GUI and user settings improvements:
- Different verbosity levels for the events log window
- Allow saving to a file the contents of the events log window
- Store user preferences about columns order on devices-tree-window
GNOME 3.0
Gnome 3.0 comes with significant changes third apps are called to follow. In order to make of udev-discover a good gnome3.0 citizen some adaptations needs to be developed.
- Port gconf to gsettings
- Full use of gobject-introspection
- Add a mallard help and documentation
- Accessibility:
- Stage 1: Pass the smoke test
- Stage 2: Talk with gnome-accessibility team
udev-discover for educational purposes:
Udev-discover could be an useful tool for newcomers for simplifying the learning curve of how udev manages the devices. Some features could be added to udev-discover in order to fulfill this:
- Provide a help window with:
- Description of the subsystems
- Description of what does every udev device info means
- Include some official udev inner process documentation
- Link items in the GUI with help: tooltips, a help button …
Smart filtering:
udev-discover provides a filter box for only displaying, on the devices-tree-window, those devices matching the input string on the device name, device info or device properties. In order to make this filtering smarter some intelligence should be added:
- Allow filtering with regex
- Allow filtering matching only on the device name, device info or properties.
- Provide some filter-rules-manager for easily re-use your favourite filtering strings
How can udev-discover help with udev rules?
This is just some kind of brainstorming about the topic.
- Provide some common udev rule templates when a user selects a device in the devices-tree-window
- Udev rules editor based on the templates and filling some info of the device the user selected
- Request admin privileges to install the udev rule
Gnome 3.0 comes with significant changes third apps are called to follow. In order to make of wiican a good gnome3.0 citizen some adaptations needs to be developed.
